More Phishing Scam E-Mails Hit BCPL.NET Mailboxes [Security]
April 28, 2008 - On April 15 we warned against "phishing" e-mails. They are still coming, and unfortunately several BCPL.NET customers have fallen for the scam. These e-mails have two things in common:
1) They appear to be from official-looking BCPL.NET addresses.
2) They ask you to send your BCPL.NET username and password to some e-mail address in order to prevent loss of access to your e-mail (or something similar).
These e-mails are a type of spam called "phishing", so named because the spammers are fishing for people who will fall for the scam. If they get any bites, they use the victims' usernames and passwords to log into those accounts. They then use the accounts to send out large amounts of spam.
We will NEVER request that you e-mail your username and password to us, nor will any other reputable company. If you receive a request of that type that appears to be from us or from anyone else, DO NOT RESPOND TO IT!
If you have already responded to a phishing spam, please contact the Help Desk immediately at 410-887-3297 or help@bcpl.net so we can take steps to prevent your account from being used for spam distribution.

UNIX Server Failure Causes Unexpected Down Time [Outages]
April 17, 2008 - A problem on our main UNIX server (mail.bcpl.net) at about 11:15 PM last night (Wednesday April 16th) made it impossible to connect to BCPL.NET via modem, or via Telnet, SSH or FTP to mail.bcpl.net. It also halted e-mail delivery, and brought down the www.bcpl.net web site and all other web sites hosted on the server.

The problem was fixed at about 2:35 PM today, and everything seems to be running smoothly. We are receiving huge amounts of e-mail that was queued up on remote mail servers while our mail system was down, so it may take a while for e-mail sent from outside BCPL to reach your mailbox. Please be patient.

If you are still experiencing problems, please call the BCPL.NET Help Desk at 410-887-3297.
