Who We Are
Our name is Pilgrim Christian
Day School and we are people—people like you who care about excellence
in education.
We are a part of Pilgrim Lutheran Church. The Day School is an extension
of the church and it was established in 1948 as an expression of the
importance we place on Christian Education.
The operation of the day school is carried out by a School Board
consisting of at least seven members. The Chairman is member of the
Church. Pilgrim members and nonmember parents may serve on the School
Board. Many of our School board members are professionally involved in
education and all are interested in providing academic excellence in a
Christian setting. The School Board works closely with the Principal who
is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the school.
Pilgrim Lutheran Church belongs to a larger association of churches
known as the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. The educational system of
our synod is the second largest parochial system in the nation and we
have a long history of experience in education. We mention this so that
you will be assured that we have all the resources and trained personnel
to support the operation of the school.
Pilgrim Christian Day School is accredited by the Maryland State
Department of Education and therefore all of our teachers meet standards
established by the State Department.

The religious instructional materials are also carefully selected and
geared to each age level. Weekly chapel services are held and daily
devotions are part of the school curriculum. We feel that the discipline
of formal religious instruction is important but beyond that, we see
Christianity as much more than instruction.
Christianity is a way of life that is lived out by faith in God
through the relationships, responsibilities and situations of daily
life.
We place great importance on the development of a positive self image
in each child. We see all of life as a discovery-learning application
process in which each person is challenged to live up to his/her full
potential as a loved child of God.
According to studies and our experience, the teacher is the single
most important factor in the educational process. We, therefore, place
great importance on the choice of our staff. Our teachers are positive
role models. They have love and respect for children and are dedicated
to excellence in education.
We also believe strongly in the cooperation of home and school.
Teachers meet with parents in the home or at school before opening day
in September. Parent/teacher conferences are scheduled at the end of the first and second marking
period. Close communication between teachers and parents is encouraged, throughout
the year.
An organization called the Parent-Teacher-Friends Association (PTFA)
has been established to facilitate the cooperation of school and home.
Church members, with or without children in the Day School, are the
friends' part of the organization. They add their Christian concern and
support to the staff and parents to create a support system.
The network of people—teachers, parents, church members and pastor—along with outside resources available to the Day School, combines its
talents and efforts to provide the very best in education for children.
Pilgrim Christian Day School will not discriminate on the basis of
race, color, sex, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its

programs, and guarantees to all the rights, privileges, programs and
activities generally accorded or made available to students at the

Core Curriculum
Following an integrated structure, our curriculum ensures that children
are exposed to essential knowledge in English/language arts, math,
science, fine arts, music and social studies. Children receive solid
academic content and skills so they acquire a firm foundation for
higher-level schooling. Children receive encouragement and instruction
to live in Service to Christ and to others. They are taught how to
develop and use their abilities in further schooling and adult life.
Students receive daily literacy instruction in pre-kindergarten and
kindergarten and reading/language arts instruction from first grade on.
Mathematics, science or social studies and religion are also taught
daily. All teachers are prepared to teach challenging content.
Special Subjects
Pilgrim Christian Day School promotes the development of all children's
gifts and talents by providing resource staff that delivers instruction
in music, art, computers, foreign language and physical education. In
this manner, we emphasize the importance of educating the whole child.
Religion
Religion/worship is not confined to classroom instruction only, but
includes daily devotions and weekly chapel services. The lessons learned
are put to use in school life. Children learn the Word of God and its
application to their own lives. Students at all grade levels present the
Gospel and serve as readers, ushers, and acolytes. The pastor conducts a
weekly religion class for fifth graders, serves as chapel leader and
provides spiritual guidance to the school community. Pilgrim Christian
Day School is affiliated with Pilgrim Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod operates the second largest parochial
school system in the nation.
Home-School-Church-Community Links
Our priority is to develop students who are both educated and caring. We
incorporate numerous opportunities for children, parents, teachers and
community to serve as tutors, coaches, class parents, volunteers and
godparents. Children are led to help others not only at school but also
in the larger community. We welcome parents in roles ranging from class
parent and chaperone to classroom assistant and speaker. All members
work to maintain a nurturing and productive school environment. |
