Outlook Express Spam Filtering Setup

Since BCPL added the Barracuda Spam & Virus Firewall, most emails that are spam have been tagged as such in the subject line of email messages (i.e. [SPAM]). Many email programs, like Outlook Express, have the ability to filter messages into individual folders you create to further sort out your inbox everytime you retrieve your new mail.

These instructions will show you how to create spam filtering rules in Outlook Express. This will allow Outlook Express to automatically send messages with [SPAM] in the subject line to a new folder that you create titled SPAM.

Outlook Express screen shot Open Outlook Express.

Click Tools, then Message Rules, then Mail from the menu.

This will launch the setup for the New Mail Rules Screen.

If rules already exist, a different menu will appear. Click the New button located on the top right.

For section (1), Check the Condition Where the Subject line contains specific words from the list.

For section (2), Check the Action Move it to the specified folder from the list.

Click the New Folder Button.

Type SPAM in the white text box (The folder name SPAM is only a suggestion, you can name this folder whatever you choose).

Click OK.

Click OK again.

When you return to your main Outlook Express screen you will notice that a new folder SPAM has been created.

Outlook Express will now automatically place all email messages containing the word [SPAM] into the SPAM folder.

To preserve disk space and to make sure that all messages are indeed spam, periodically check this folder and delete the spam messages that are in it.
