In order to connect to the Internet, the Macintosh needs two types of
programs. The first program is essentially a dialer that controls the
modem as well as the login process. (ConfigPPP, FreePPP, PPP, Remote
Access) The second part of a Mac Internet connection is the software that
handles the network connection. (MacTCP, TCP/IP) This program contains all
of the network settings like the domain name and DNS addresses of the
service provider.
To find out what software you have and what you need to do to setup your Mac for connection to the
Internet, do the following:
- Click the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen. Choose Find
file.
- In the window that opens up, type ppp in the box and click the Find
button.
- A new window will open called Items found. Look for an application
program named FreePPP, or a control panel named ConfigPPP.
- If you have ConfigPPP, click here. If you have
FreePPP, click here. If you have both, choose
FreePPP.
If you don't see the right things in the Control Panel, or if you think
you don't have the right software, you can try obtaining it at www.apple.com or www.macorchard.com.
