Setup Quick Start
For the experienced Internet user
If you already know your way around your TCP/IP, PPP, e-mail, and
other Internet software and do not need detailed step-by-step setup
instructions, the following should be enough to get you up and running.
Not every software package will need every one of these settings.
TCP/IP and PPP Dialer Settings
- Your IP Address:
- Assigned by server. Also known as "Automatic", "Dynamic" or
"Negotiated". Use 0.0.0.0 if your software insists that you
enter an IP address.
- Subnet Mask (Netmask):
- Assigned by server. Enter 255.255.255.0 if your software
insists on it.
- Gateway Address:
- Assigned by server. Enter 204.255.212.1 if your software
insists on it.
- Host Name:
- Optional. Leave blank, or enter your BCPL.NET username.
This setting is meaningless in a PPP connection with a
server-assigned IP address.
- Domain Name:
- bcpl.net
- Name Server (DNS):
- Assigned by server. If your software insists on it,
enter the following in the order shown:
204.255.212.14
206.66.216.8
- Dialup Phone Number:
- 410-296-5500
- Hardware Error Correction (modem-based error correction):
- Normally should be enabled, but disabling error correction
can sometimes help if you have connection reliability
problems.
- Hardware Compression (modem-based compression):
- Normally should be enabled, but disabling compression can
sometimes help if you have connection reliability
problems.
- TCP Header Compression:
- Optional. Header compression is nearly useless with modern
modems capable of hardware compression, and in some cases may
even slow down your connections and/or decrease their
reliability. Disable header compression if you experience
connection problems.
- Username (Login Name):
- As shown in your welcome letter.
- Password:
- As shown in your welcome letter.
E-Mail Settings
- E-Mail Address:
- As shown in your welcome letter. For most customers this
will be username@bcpl.net, substituting your assigned username
for "username" (example: jdoe@bcpl.net). Customers for whom we
host domains have the option of using username@domain.name,
substituting your username for "username" and your domain name
for "domain.name" (example: jdoe@megamonkeys.com).
- SMTP (Outgoing Mail) Server:
- mail.bcpl.net
- POP3 (Incoming Mail) Server:
- mail.bcpl.net
- POP3 Account:
- In most mail programs this is your username (example: jdoe).
In some it is a combination of username and mail server in the
form of a quasi e-mail address (example: jdoe@mail.bcpl.net).
IMPORTANT: Set your mail program to remove mail from the
server. How you do this depends on which mail program you use. Contact
the Help Desk if you need assistance.
Miscellaneous Settings
- Web Browser Start Page:
- Set this to your favorite Web page. We recommend
http://www.bcpl.net
- NNTP (News) Server:
- news.abs.net
- NTP (Network Time) Server:
- tick.bcpl.net
- UNIX Shell Account Access:
- If you have a PPP connection, use an SSH or Telnet
program to connect to mail.bcpl.net.
If you use terminal software, set it to dial 410-296-5500.
