Forwarding Your Email

The following instructions should help you forward your email. Although these instructions make use of a Windows 98 system, the same instructions should also work with Windows 95, ME, 2000 and XP. However, be aware that the screenshots on this page may not match up exactly for these other operating systems, but they should be very similar.

Some things to remember before following these directions:

  • Make sure that the email address that is being forwarded to is a valid email address.
  • If you forward email from account 'A' to account 'B', do not forward email from account 'B' to account 'A'. This will cause an infinite loop, which will cause the email to not be received at either account.
  • If either of the above things happens, the BCPL administrator will remove the forward file.

A telnet window should now open on your screen.

After a few seconds you should be prompted for your login name, which is the same as your username. For example, if your e-mail address is jdoe@bcpl.net, your username is jdoe.

Type your username at the login prompt and then hit Enter on the keyboard.

Now type your password at the Password prompt and then hit Enter on the keyboard.

Note: Nothing will show up when you type your password - this is normal.

After logging in, you should see a welcome screen with some contact information. You should then be asked for a terminal type.

At the terminal prompt, enter your desired terminal type.

If you don't know what terminal type to choose, type the number 1 and hit the Enter key.

You are now logged into your UNIX shell. You should see a prompt similar to  /u3/jdoe $

The $ prompt signifies that UNIX is ready to take your commands.

When you are ready to leave your UNIX shell, type exit at the $ prompt.

At the $ prompt, type pico .forward.

Press Enter.

Type in the username and address that you want your e-mail to be forwarded to. (Ex: jdoe@hotmail.com)

Press the Ctrl key and the X key simultaneously to save.

Press Y to save modified buffer; you will then see the name of the file, .forward.

Press Enter.

To change the email address to have mail forwarded to, open the file by typing pico .forward, erase the old address, and type the new one. If you no longer want to have your email forwarded, type rm .forward at the unix prompt.
