--------------------------------------------- INTERNET CONNECTION RESTORED TUESDAY, JUNE 24 --------------------------------------------- UUNET Technologies solved the problems at their Vienna, Virginia hub at about 3:00 PM this afternoon, but experienced severe routing instability for the rest of the afternoon. As of about 5:20 PM that problem was solved, and our connection to the rest of the Internet has been stable since then. However, the lack of a stable connection for the better part of the day has left the Sun SPARC 1000 (our UNIX host) littered with zombie processes and other virtual cobwebs that need to be cleared out in order to bring us back to full efficiency. Therefore it will be rebooted at 6:45 PM. Anyone logged into a UNIX shell acount at reboot time will be logged out, and will not be able to log back in until the SPARC 1000 comes back up. User authentication for PPP access will not be available during the reboot, so new PPP connections will not be possible until the SPARC 1000 comes back up. Users who already have PPP connections at the time will not lose their connections or their access to the rest of the Internet, but will not be able to access services running on the SPARC 1000 (POP mail, BCPL Web pages, etc.) until the SPARC 1000 comes back up. Unless something unforseen occurs, the SPARC 1000 should be back up with all services restored about five minutes after the reboot. ------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have questions about this, or about anything else related to your BCPL Internet Account, please contact the BCPL Help Desk.
