------------------------ MORE NEWS FOR PINE USERS ------------------------ Another new version of Pine (4.03) has been installed. It is mainly a bug-fix release, offering no new features over Pine 4.02. If you enter "pine" at the shell prompt you will get 4.03. If you want to use an older version, enter "pine391" for Pine 3.91, "pine393" for Pine 3.93, or "pine396" for Pine 3.96. Pine 4.02 has been deleted from the system. If you use only Pine, or if you use only a mail program on your Mac or PC, the rest of this message doesn't apply to you. If you use both, please read on. If you switch back and forth between Pine and a Mac or PC-based mail program, you have probably noticed messages with the subject "DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE -- FOLDER INTERNAL DATA" in among the other messages downloaded to your Mac or PC. This is a pseudo-message created by Pine 4.x and stored in your mail spool file on the mail server. It provides Pine with information about the format of your Pine Inbox", and enables a few esoteric features in the new Pine. Pine hides the pseudo-message, so you don't see it in your Inbox index while using Pine. However, your Mac or PC-based mail program will download it along with your real mail. If your mail program is set to delete mail from the server (as it should be), the pseudo-message is deleted too. Next time you start up Pine, it creates a new one. Next time you download mail to your Mac or PC, you download the new pseudo-message too, and it is deleted from the server. Next time you start up Pine, it creates a new pseudo-message. This cycle continues forever if you switch back and forth between Pine 4.x and another mail program. When you read mail with a Mac or PC-based mail program you can safely ignore the "DO NOT DELETE" warning. The pseudo-message is relevant only to Pine, so you can safely delete it from your Mac or PC's Inbox. You can also configure Pine to stop creating those pseudo-messages, as follows: o Start up Pine. o At Pine's main menu, press "S" (setup) then "C" (configuration). o Use your arrow keys to scroll through the list of configuration options until you find "quell-folder-internal-msg". o With "quell-folder-internal-msg" highlighted, press "X" to set that option. An "X" should appear in the brackets next to the option. o Press "E" to exit configuration mode, then "Y" to save the changes. The next time you download mail to your Mac or PC you will get one last pseudo-message, which will then be deleted from the server. Next time you start up Pine, it will not create another pseudo-message. Advanced Pine users may prefer to live with the pseudo-messages if they want to use any of the advanced features that require them. See the release notes ("R" at the main menu) for details. -------------------------------------------------------------------- BCPL.NET INTERNET SERVICES CONTACTS: ----------------------------------- Administration & Policy: ispadmin@bcpl.net 410-887-6180 Sales, Renewals, Account Status: accounts@bcpl.net 410-887-4172 Technical Support (Help Desk): help@bcpl.net 410-887-3297 E-Mail & Newsgroup Abuse Reports: abuse@bcpl.net 410-887-6180 FAX: 410-887-2091 Help Pages: http://www.bcpl.net/help.html (or enter "help" at the UNIX shell prompt) System News Archives: http://www.bcpl.net/sysnews.html (or enter "sysnews" at the UNIX shell prompt)
