------------------- MODEM POOL EXPANDED ------------------- On Wednesday, September 16, we brought up another access server on 410-296-5500. This increases the modem pool on that number to a total of 460 lines. The new modems are configured to accept both K56FLEX and V.90 56K connections, as well as connections from slower modems. There is no way to call the new V.90 access server specifically. It is on the same number as all the rest, so whether or not you happen to connect to it is purely a matter of luck. We will monitor the performance of the new access server for about a week. If it seems to be performing well, the other nine access servers will be upgraded during the last week of September and/or first week of October. If it does not perform well, we will revert to K56FLEX only on the new access server, and will wait for the next version of Cisco's V.90 firmware. IMPORTANT: If you currently use a K56FLEX modem, DO NOT upgrade it to V.90 until we announce that ALL our access servers have been upgraded. Most consumer-grade K56FLEX modems that are upgraded to V.90 cannot switch back and forth automatically between V.90 and K56FLEX to match the modem at the ISP's end. Instead, you must reflash the modem with the V.90 or K56FLEX firmware code, depending on which type of modem you plan to connect to. If you upgrade to V.90 before we are completely upgraded, and if your upgraded modem can't auto-switch back to K56FLEX, then you will probably experience connection problems. That does not apply to most X2 modems. Most consumer-grade X2 modems that are upgraded to V.90 are able to switch back and forth between V.90 and X2 to match the ISP's modem. Check your modem manual if you are not sure about your X2 modem.
