---------------------------------------- REVISED WEB SERVER LOG ROTATION SCHEDULE ---------------------------------------- This will be of interest primarily to customers who have Web sites on www.bcpl.net, and who extract statistics for their sites from the Web server's logs. Everyone else may ignore this. The logs in question are "access_log", "error_log", and "referer_log", located in the /carl/httpd/logs directory on mail.bcpl.net (a.k.a. www.bcpl.net). For several years the Web server logs have been "rotated" on a weekly basis. access_log, error_log, and referer_log are the logs for the current week, and access_log.0, error_log.0, and referer_log.0 are the logs for the previous week. error_log.0 and referer_log.0 are deleted automatically at 12:01 AM Tuesday, and access_log.0 is kept until 12:01 AM Sunday or until disk space get tight, which ever happens first. It is no longer possible to maintain that schedule. The Web server logs now grow at such a rapid rate and to such a large size that it is usually necessary to delete error_log.0 and referer_log.0 late Sunday or early Monday, and access_log.0 usually must be deleted late Tuesday. If this is not done the hard disk on which the logs are stored fills up, making it impossible for the Web server to write any more log entries. Effective Sunday, October 3, the logs will be rotated every day at 12:01 AM. We will start out keeping logs for the current day plus the two previous days, but this is subject to change depending on the disk space situation. The daily logs will be named as follows: o access_log, error_log, and referer_log will always be the logs for the current day. o access_log.0, error_log.0, and referer_log.0 will always be the logs for the previous day. o access_log.1, error_log.1, and referer_log.1 will always be the logs from two days ago. If you are currently extracting statistics from the Web server logs, as of Sunday October 3 you will need to do it on a daily schedule rather than weekly. If you are using a "cron" job to gather your statistics automatically, you will need to edit your "crontab" to accommodate the new schedule.
