--------------------------------------- UNSCHEDULED DOWNTIME: APRIL 5 & 6, 1997 --------------------------------------- Some time between about 9:00 PM EST on Saturday and about 3:00 AM EDT on Sunday, something happened on our UNIX host (mail.bcpl.lib.md.us) that filled all its swap space. This caused most processes to either slow to a crawl or refuse to run altogether. The result, from the users' point of view, it was almost impossible to make a PPP connection or log into your UNIX shell account. If you were able to get a connection, you probably weren't able to do much with it. Before going to sleep Saturday night (early for a change) I left my Mac logged in from home with some diagnostics running. Something woke me up at about 3:00 AM (the UNIX machine screaming for help?), and a look at those diagnostics told me things were not right. The UNIX machine wouldn't respond to any commands, so I came into work to fix it. I couldn't even log in from the console, which is unusual, so I had to bring the machine down and back up ungracefully with the power switch. As I write this (4:00 AM EDT) everything seems to be okay. Sorry about the unexpected service interruption. --------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have questions about this or about anything else pertaining to your BCPL Internet Account, please contact the BCPL Help Desk: Phone: 410-887-3297 FAX: 410-887-2091 E-Mail: oz@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us
