TUESDAY MAY 13: NEWS SERVER DOWN

The news server at ABSnet has been down since some time this morning, and
is still down as of 5:15 PM.  According to ABSnet staff, the computer
itself (news.abs.net) is fine, but the news server software (INN) running
on it is not.  It crashed after its daily purge of old news articles, and
refuses to come back up in a stable condition. 
 
The technical staff at ABSnet will continue to work on the problem tonight
until it is fixed.  I will monitor the situation, and will post another
System News message when the news server comes back on line.
