---------------------------------------- INTERNET BACKBONE PROBLEMS: 1 APRIL 1997 ---------------------------------------- This afternoon we have received many reports of problems connecting to Internet sites outside the BCPL network. Some sites are reachable without problem, some are reachable only sporadically, and others can't be reached at all. The problem is not a local one. BCPL's network, domain name servers, and connections to the Internet are working fine. As far as we can tell, the problem is either at Mae-East (the network access point that ties together most of the major eastern networks), or at BBN Planet (one of the major carriers on the Internet backbone), or both. Our own observation has been that traffic that does not have to go through Mae-East or BBN Planet seems usually to reach its destination. Traffic that does have to go through Mae-East or BBN Planet usually does not. At present we have no details about the problem, but will report them here if/when we are able to get more information. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have questions about this, or about anything else related to your BCPL Internet Account, please contact the BCPL Help Desk by any of the following methods: Phone: 410-887-3297 FAX: 410-887-2091 E-Mail: oz@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us
