---------------------------------------------- SCHEDULED DOWN TIME: WEDNESDAY, 9 OCTOBER 1996 ---------------------------------------------- On Wednesday, October 9, we will transfer all UNIX-based services from our old Sun SPARC 20 UNIX host to a new Sun SPARC 1000. The new UNIX host will give us the extra space and processing power needed to accommodate our expanding Web and user services. The SPARC 20 will be taken off line at about 8:00 AM, and a full backup will be done. The backup tape will then be used to move all users' directories and files to the new SPARC 1000, as well as other directories and files that have not already been moved. The configuration files on the SPARC 1000 will then be edited to give it the network and Internet identities formerly used by the SPARC 20. The whole process will probably take most of Wednesday morning to complete. Dial-up customers will not be able to access their accounts during that time. Barring unforeseen difficulties, we expect full service to be restored no later than noon. The migration to the new UNIX host will not change how you log in or how you use your account.
