MODEM NEWS UPDATE

At one point in the last modem news update (System News, September 21) I
mistyped the phone number for the new modem pool as 297-2771 instead of
the correct 296-2771.  The correct number was given several times
elsewhere in that same System News, so I hope the typo didn't cause too
much confusion. The correct number is 296-2771, not 297-2771. 
 
We have learned from Bell Atlantic that the last two PRI lines will be
installed on Friday, September 27.  If the installation goes well it will
allow us to bring the fifth Cisco AS5200 Access Server on line, expanding
the new modem pool to 230 lines.
 
We will watch the expanded modem pool for several days to make sure it is
handling calls correctly.  If everything appears to be okay, Bell Atlantic
will switch the old 296-5500 number over to the new modem pool on Tuesday,
October 1.  Once that is done a call to either number (296-5500 or
296-2771) will connect you to the new modem pool.  After that the old
modem pool will no longer be accessible. 
 
When we made the new modem pool available on an experimental basis I asked
everyone who used it to let me know how it worked for them.  The response
has been so overwhelming that my Inbox is swamped!  I greatly appreciate
your input, and I regret that the sheer volume of e-mail has made it
impossible to reply to everyone.  Many thanks to all of you who helped us
torture test the new modems!
