------------ WE HAVE POP! ------------ We have installed a POP3 server on our UNIX host and have been testing it for the past two days. It seems to work perfectly! This means that those of you who use PPP connections may now use Netscape (if it is a very recent version), Eudora, Air Mail, and similar programs on your Macs and PCs to read and write e-mail. Each e-mail program has its own way of working and its own configuration oddities. We will provide general setup instructions on the BCPL Help pages as soon as possible, but we cannot possibly cover every e-mail program in detail. Please read the documentation that came with yours carefully! The following configuration tips should be enough to get you started: POP Server: mail.bcpl.lib.md.us SMTP Server: mail.bcpl.lib.md.us Ph Server: leave blank POP Account: Enter your BCPL user name (i.e "jdoe") or your full e-mail address (i.e. "jdoe@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us"), depending on the requirements of your software. POP Password: Your normal BCPL login password. Return Address: Enter your normal BCPL e-mail address (i.e. "jdoe@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us") If your computer is used by several people, and if your mail software gives you the option of entering your password manually each time you connect to collect new mail, then we recommend that you use that option. This will prevents others from reading your mail from your computer. Your software probably gives you the option of leaving your mail on the server or deleting it from the server once it is downloaded to your computer. If you choose to leave it on the server, then it will exist both there and on your own computer. You will still need to use Pine or Mail in your UNIX account to delete unwanted mail. We recommend that you use your software's "Leave Mail On Server" option only if you plan to read and write mail both ways. The first time you download your mail, most mail programs will download only mail marked "New" (i.e. unread) from your mail file on the server. This means that any old (i.e. read) messages still in your Pine Inbox will remain on the server and will not be downloaded by your mail program. You will need to use Pine to deal with them. More detail will be provided in the Help pages as soon as possible. Until then, please direct questions to the Help Desk at oz@mail.bcpl.lib.md.us or 887-3297.
