----------------- ABOUT SYSTEM NEWS ----------------- Effective immediately, System News messages will be distributed as follows: Via the UNIX shell's "news" function: ------------------------------------ When you log into your UNIX shell account, the news function automatically displays any System News messages you have not yet seen. If the message is more than will fit on one screen, a "more" prompt appears at the bottom of the screen, prompting you to press the space bar to see the next page. When the "more" prompt is present you may press "q" to break out of the display. You may redisplay all existing System News messages at any time by entering "allnews" at your UNIX shell prompt. Via the POP mail server's "bulletin" function: --------------------------------------------- Our POP3 server, which makes it possible for PPP access users to retrieve mail using Eudora, Air Mail, Netscape Navigator, and similar mail clients, is configured to distribute "bulletins" to all POP mail users. All System News messages will be distributed as bulletins so they will be seen by POP mail users who never log into their UNIX shell accounts. Via the "System News" link on the BCPL home page: ------------------------------------------------ The "System News" link now takes you to a page containing a link for each existing System News message. This makes it possible for PPP access users who are primarily Web users and never log into their UNIX shell accounts and don't read e-mail via the POP server to keep up to date. Point your Web browser at the BCPL home page (http://www.bcpl.lib.md.us/bcpl.html) and select the "System News" link. Only System News messages of lasting interest will be included. Our weekly (more or less) "Reboot Warnings" will not be included, for example.
