UUNET is our "upstream provider", through whom we connect to the rest of the Internet. In recent months we have seen bandwidth usage on our existing two T1 lines to UUNET increase dramatically, to the point where sometimes during peak business hours we were trying to move more data than two T1 lines could handle. The third T1 line added yesterday solves that problem. Coincidentally, the Help Desk received many calls on Tuesday complaining of very slow access to remote Web sites. That was not caused by overload on BCPL.NET's network or on our connection to UUNET. We're still short on details, but it looks like one or more sections of the Internet "backbone" was having problems. This made access to some remote sites very slow or even impossible. What ever the problem was, it had pretty much cleared up by mid-morning Wednesday.
