That is the process that accepts requests for certain types of incoming connections, then passes them off to the server software responsible for handling the session: "telnetd" for Telnet connections, "ftpd" for FTP connections, "popper" for POP3 mail connections, and "imapd" for IMAP mail connections. While inetd was down it was impossible to make a Telnet or FTP connection to mail.bcpl.net, and it was impossible to use a POP3 or IMAP mail program or WebMail to retrieve new mail. No other services were affected. Service was not restored to normal until I got to work at 8:30 AM, so I hope our night owl customers were not too greatly inconvenienced. Normally I'm a night owl too and so would have noticed (and fixed) the problem right away, but last night I actually went to sleep early for the first time in ages. Sorry about that, fellow night owls, but I REALLY needed the sleep!
