Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2001 13:53:11 -0400 (EDT) From: BCPL.NET SysAdmin To: BCPL.NET NEWS Subject: BCPL.NET NEWS: Scheduled Down Time 6/13/01 ------------------------------------------------ BCPL.NET DIALUP ACCESS & MOST BCPL STAFF NETWORK ACCESS WILL BE DOWN MORNING OF WEDNESDAY JUNE 13 ------------------------------------------------ We have just learned that power to part of our building will be turned off at 6:30 AM on Wednesday June 13 in order for some major electrical work to be done. The duration of the power outage is expected to be two hours, but could stretch to three. The Uninterruptable Power Supplies that feed our networking equipment, dial-up equipment, and servers cannot maintain power for that length of time. Therefore we will be shutting just about everything down at or shortly after 6:30 AM. This will affect BCPL.NET Customers and BCPL staff as follows: ------------------ BCPL.NET Customers ------------------ During the power outage there will be no dial-up access to BCPL.NET, no Telnet or FTP access to BCPL.NET, no access to BCPL.NET e-mail, and no access to the www.bcpl.net, www.bcplonline.org, or carlweb.bcpl.lib.md.us web servers. For all intents and purposes, BCPL.NET will be completely out of service until power is restored. Unless Murphy and his law interfere, that should be at about 8:30 AM. ---------- BCPL Staff ---------- Please distribute this within your branch or department for the benefit of staff who do not check their e-mail frequently. Staff will be affected as described below, depending on where you are. Branch Staff: ------------ During the outage your PCs will not have access to anything on the WAN. Your PCs will not be able to log into the network. You will be able to use your PCs for word processing and similar tasks that do not require network access, but that's all. You will not be able to use any CARL function (IMDS, CARLweb, ECAT, etc). You will not be able to access your e-mail, the Web, or your files in Departments or Users. Unless something goes very wrong, branches should regain full access well before opening for business at 10:00 AM. However you might want to have hand-charging supplies ready just in case. The Staff Help Desk will contact all branches by phone when full access is restored. That should be at about 8:30 AM, barring unforeseen difficulties. Administrative Offices Staff: ---------------------------- Depending on what part of the building you are in, you may or may not have power early Wednesday morning. If you have no power, obviously you cannot use your PCs. If you do have power, you may turn on your PCs but you may or may not be able to log into the network. Even if you can log into the network, your PCs will not have access to anything on the WAN. You will not be able to use any CARL function (IMDS, CARLweb, ECAT, etc). You will not be able to access your e-mail, the Web, or your files on the AO NT servers (Departments or Users). You will be able to do word processing and similar tasks that do not require network access, but that's all. PCs do not take kindly to losing power unexpectedly, so to avoid possible problems please make sure all PCs in the Administrative Offices are shut down when you leave Tuesday evening. Desktop Support staff will get in touch with all AO departments that have their own NT servers to make sure you know how to shut them down. We will use the paging system to inform AO staff when full access is restored. That should be at about 8:30 AM, barring unforeseen difficulties. -- BCPL.NET INTERNET SERVICES 320 York Road Towson, MD 21204-5179 U.S.A.
