HALON is nasty stuff, so the Fire Department ordered us to evacuate the area. At about 5:20 PM, in the course of their investigation, they shut down all power to the computer room. This shut down all BCPL.NET dialup access, as well as access to the Internet and most of the Library's online resources (circulation system, online catalog, etc.) from computers within the Library. Unfortunately the manner in which the power was shut down damaged the uninterruptable power supply (UPS). We were not able to bring it back on line until 6:25 PM. At that point all the equipment in the computer room powered back up and BCPL.NET dialup service resumed. The only casualty was one dialup access server that seems to have been damaged by the power fluctuations. This has reduced our modem pool by 46 modems, which is going to cause busy signal problems until replacement parts arrive.
