UUNET fixed the problem at about 1:25 PM, restoring normal service. While our UUNET connection was down, BCPL.NET dial-up customers and BCPL staff could access resources on BCPL.NET's own network (the BCPL.NET Web site, the BCPL Web site, and the library catalog for example), but could not access anything out on the Internet itself (remote Web sites, for example). The UUNET Help Desk technician very sheepishly told me that the failure was caused by a cable accidentally knocked loose by one of their network technicians. These things happen. They shouldn't happen, but they do. We regret the interruption, and we're glad UUNET found and fixed the problem quickly. Chip -- BCPL.NET INTERNET SERVICES 320 York Road Towson, MD 21204-5179 U.S.A.
