This prevented our system from verifying usernames and passwords, so dial-up logins failed. We fixed the problem (or so we thought) and dial-up logins seemed to work correctly for the rest of the day. Apparently the problem resurfaced late Wednesday evening and became progressively worse through the night and into Thursday morning. Rather than waste more time troubleshooting, we rebooted the UNIX server on which the user authentication process runs (mail.bcpl.net) at 9:45 AM Thursday morning. That seems to have solved the problem, but we will continue to monitor it closely. Thursday morning we found almost 300 messages left on the Help Desk phones. We are trying to return as many of those calls as possible, but if we don't manage to get back to you we hope this e-mail will be sufficient follow-up. Sorry about the interruption to service!
