Ad-Aware Setup Instructions

The following instructions will walk you through downloading, installing, and running Ad-Aware. This program will scan your hard drive for spyware.

NOTE: Please make sure you are connected to the Internet before attempting to follow these instructions.

Downloading and installing Ad-Aware

  1. To download Ad-Aware, click here.
  2. In the File download box that appears, click Save.
  3. A Save as box will appear. In this box, make sure Desktop is selected in the Save in box at the top of the window. Click Save.
  4. Once the download has completed, close your web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape).
  5. The Ad-Aware setup program icon should now be on your desktop. Double-click the icon to begin installing Ad-Aware on your computer.
  6. The Installation Wizard will appear. Click Next at each prompt. Click Finish at the end of the installation.

Running Ad-Aware

  1. If you are not already connected to the Internet, do so now.
  2. Double click the Ad-Aware 6.0 icon on your desktop (not the setup program icon you used in step 3 in the last section)
  3. Click Check for updates now.
  4. Click Connect.
  5. A screen may appear saying that there is a new reference file available. If this screen appears, click OK to download and install the updates. If it does not appear, click Finish.
  6. If Ad-Aware has updates and the progress bar has reached 100%, click Finish.
  7. Click the Start button at the bottom right corner of the Ad-aware window.
  8. Click Next.

    Ad-Aware will begin to scan your computer's hard drive for known spyware. Depending on the speed and size of your hard drive, this may take several minutes.

  9. Once it has finished scanning, click Next.
  10. A list of files that Ad-Aware has found will appear. Place a checkmark next to each item in thislist that you would like to remove. If you would like to remove everything on the list (recommended), right-click anywhere on the list and then left-click Select all objects. Click Next.
  11. It will prompt you to make sure you want to delete these files. Click the OK button.
  12. You will then return to the main Ad-Aware window. Close Ad-Aware by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the Ad-Aware window.
