This
course focuses on the variety of fee-based database services
and Internet sources characteristic of today's information landscape.
Students will learn about their design and structure and advanced
search techniques and strategies for information retrieval. Advanced
Reference is designed for persons with a basic knowledge of reference
resources, manual searches, and client question negotiations.
ISTC is a hands-on course designed around a series of student
exercises. |

Course Objectives
At the completion of the course, the
student will be able to:

- Select appropriate retrieval system and
database for information need.
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills to
solve a complex search problem.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the application
and design of a search strategy.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of
fee-based databases.
- Develop a working knowledge of DIALOG
database services and searching.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the use of
Internet search engines.
- Select and evaluate electronic resources
appropriate for K-12 students.
- Identify and discuss opportunities and
challenges in providing to K-12 populations access to electronic
resources.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the development,
design, and utility of virtual libraries.
- Identify and discuss problems, issues,
and future developments in information retrieval and online searching.
