Course Description

This course is intended to prepare persons to effectively work with resources in schools, information centers, public libraries, and areas with an organized collection of materials. This course includes the following:

 
  • evaluation of the principles of selection;
 
  • assessment of curricular needs in terms of all formats of media;
 
  • specification of acquisition procedures and sources for obtaining media;
 
  • selection, evaluation, and utilization of all formats of media;
 
  • examination of major issues related to selection and evaluation.

Course Objectives

Following completion of the course, the student will be able to:

   1. evaluate, develop, and defend an objective set of written standards for the evaluation of print and
nonprint materials;
   2. describe and evaluate an appropriate range of selection aids and review sources according to objective criteria;
   3. develop strategies for the integration of school library media center (SLMC) resources and curricular resources within a local education agency (LEA);
   4. identify administrative and collaborative strategies for the implementation of print, nonprint, electronic media, and human resources to serve diverse populations and special needs clients;
   5. identify, describe, and utilize current technology in the acquisition of resource material;
   6. explain the functions and limitations of various media and review sources;
   7. describe critical issues which affect collection development and services including:
   multicultural materials
   gender stereotyping
   special needs clients
   censorship including Internet filtering
   copyright laws
   8. explain the relationship between copyright law, selection, evaluation, and access to information;
   9. critically analyze and evaluate library collections according to currently accepted local, regional, and national standards;
  10. use and evaluate computerized databases and acquisition tools to develop collections;
  11. evaluate instructional design elements in instructional software in terms of its fulfillment of a given set of educational criteria;
  12. identify, access, and evaluate worldwide telecommunications networks and develop a virtual library appropriate for selective clients.

Course Requirements
Each student must:

   1. Have a mentor to facilitate decision-making in this content area;
   2. Develop a portfolio of selection documents and resources;
   3. Have electronic and manual access to an academic or special library;
   4. Evaluate print, nonprint, and electronic resources appropriate for library collections;
   5. Develop an instructional activity which integrates library skills with various media formats;
   6. Develop and present research findings on one major issue in selection;
   7. Present oral presenations on selected topics during class;
   8. Read and annotate current journal articles related to media selection;
   9. Read required text and other selections;
  10. Work cooperatively within a team.

Final Grades

  The final grade will be determined by six projects, two written exams, and participation in class discussion. Assignment due dates will be indicated by the instructor(s).

 86% to 92%

 C

 81% to 85%
300 - 317 points
 
  An incomplete grade ("I") is given when a student is unable to complete the requirements of the course. An incomplete can be granted only for verified health reasons or for documented circumstances beyond the control of the student.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend all classes and be prepared to begin class sessions at 4:20 p.m. Ten points will be deducted from Class Participation Points for each unexcused missed class. Absences cue to personal illness, bereavement, and religious holiday are excused absences.

Hours of Operation
Cook library has many of the selection tools we will be discussing in class. Students will visit the library as a group in order to see the location of these resources. Also, there are many online databases, journals, and other references that will be helpful to your studies.
