Index for Ward and Associated Families of Sassafras Neck, Cecil County, Maryland

One of the original settlers in Cecil County. He had three tracts of land in 1707 when the rent roll was made.

  • "Ward's Knowledge" 140 acres surveyed for him October 22, 1694.

  • "Ward's Addition" 450 acres surveyed June 30, 1703.

  • "Cox's Forrest" 200 of the 500 acres in the tract belonged to him.

  • He owned the place called "Greenfields" which afterwards belonged to the Lusby family.

Positions held:

  • Vestryman at St. Stephen's - 1701 - 1702 - 1703 - 1704 - 1707, 1708, 1709, 1712, 1713. Styled Major John Ward 1717 and 1719. Styled Colonel John Ward 1722, 1723, 1724, 1725, 1726. Retired in 1735.
  • Member of Maryland House of Burgesses from Cecil County, 1708, 1709, 1711, 1715, 1716. Styled Major John Ward 1722 to 1727, 1732 to 1736. Styled Colonel John Ward having this sat in the House of Burgesses during 16 years of the period from 1708 to 1736.
  • High Sheriff of Cecil County 1710 to 1713.
  • He is styled Colonel John Ward in a number of conveyances or deeds which are recorded among the land records of Cecil County. Thus in a deed from John Veazey and Rebecca, his wife, to Colonel John Ward May 11, 1738 Vol. 5, page 448 and a deed from John Ward Veazey to Alexander Williamson which refers to a lot in Fredericktown devised by Colonel John Ward to his grandson, the said John Ward Veazey. Recorded in Volume 11 of the Land Records at Elkton.

He married Mary ______ February 17, 1701. (Page 4 St. Stephen's Register)

He died in 1747. His will was proved Mar. 13, 1747.

The children of Colonel John and Mary Ward as they appear in the will and noted in St. Stephen's Register were:

  1. John Ward (107), who apparently succeeded his father in the Vestry of St. Stephen's in 1735. He died before his father and, as appears by the will of his father, left a son:
    • James Chatham Ward (108). To him Colonel John Ward devised the place called "Greenfield" which was probably regarded then as the homestead of this branch.
  2. Henry Ward (109), who as appears by his father's will, married Hannah Ricketts. It also appears by St. Stephen's Register pages 133 and 147 that his children were:
    • John Ward, born April 23, 1740.
    • Henry Ward, born July 19, 1757.
  3. Rebecca Ward (112) born November 2, 1705, (page 64 St. Stephen's). Rebecca, daughter of Colonel John Ward (106) married Colonel John Veazey, Jr. of Cherry Grove. They probably lived at Cherry Grove for many years, perhaps until her death. Colonel Veazey made a deed of gift of that place to his son Edward in 1765 and was living at Essex Lodge at the time of his death but the date on which he lived at these places does not appear. Rebecca died April 24, 1761. It appears from the will of Colonel Veazey that they had five children. The granddaughter of Colonel John and Rebecca Ward Veazey, Anne Veazey, daughter of Edward, married William Ward (13) Fourth of Woodlawn and therefore those descendants are also descended from Colonel John Ward.

On 14 February 1711 John Atkey of CE Co., planter, and his wife Anne, for the many services done by John Ward for John Atkey, conveyed to Rebecca Ward, daughter of John Ward, gentleman, 100 acres on western branch of Harbour Creek by Pain's Lott, a 500 acre tract. [CELR 2:199]

    1. Elizabeth Harrison Ward (117), born March 12, 1738.
    2. Anna Chew Ward (118), born May 26, 1740.
