He was married by the Rev. Richard Sewell, Minister of St. Stephen's Church, on March 25, 1717 to Susanna Veazey, daughter and only child of William and Rosamund Veazey and granddaughter of John and Martha Veazey of "Cherry Grove". Susanna was born Jan. 20, 1696. He died May 1734. His will dated April 26, 1734 is recorded in office of Register of Elkton, Cecil County, MD in Volume A.A. page 280 and was passed May 25, 1734. He devised "Neighbor's Grudge" or Woodlawn to his eldest son William and "Locust Thicket" to his son, John and "Sherman's Delight" to Nathaniel and his dwelling plantation to his wife. Several temporary interests were created in this property but it went finally as stated. It is not quite clear when he lived at Woodlawn or that he was living there at the time of his death. His wife was an only child and he may have lived on part of "Sherman's Delight" for a time. His eldest son was very young at this time and his eldest daughter only sixteen years old. He however held all his father's property and he has been styled "Second of Woodlawn". The children of John and Susanna Veazey Ward mentioned in his will or entered upon St. Stephen's Register (see pages 48-49 and 99 of copy of Register at MD. Historical Society) were as follows:
