Notes for WILLIAM HUSBAND:
[033102.ged]
Landed in MD 1670 about age
20.
Attempts have been made by
researchers to claim William Husband b abt. 1750 was a son of Edward Husband a
surgeon of Calvert Co., MD who acquired a 1700 acre tract of land on the
Sassafras River in the Eastern Shore of MD.
Edward was forced out of Calvert County and forbidden to practice there
because of threats he made to the Assembly over affairs of religion. Edward's will clearly shows his son William
could not have been the William b abt 1750.
Since both families were on the
Sassafras River at an early date there is probably a family relationship but as
of now it is obscure.
Early Settlers of MD;
Skodas; contains the first mentions found of William HUSBAND- Liber. 17, Folio 589 -"Feb the 2nd,
1673 Came William Husbands of St. maries County and proved Rights to fifty
acres of land due for his time of service performed in this province. Know all
men by these prescnts that I William Husband doe hereby assign sell and
set over unto John Griggs all my right title inherent of in and to fifty acres
Rights to Land to me due for my time of servis performed in this province, to
have and to hold the same to the said John Griggs his heirs or assigns forever
as writtess my hand and seale. this 2rd day of February 1673-William Husband

1670; Liber 15 Folio
445 records his service in

In that year he was elected a vestryman of Shrewsbury Parish. He died in 1717, leaving a considerable

Church, daughter of HARMON KANKEY and MARGERY HERMEN. She was born
1704 in Cecil Co, MD, and died 1767 in Cecil, MD.
Notes for JR WILLIAM HUSBAND:
[033102.ged]
William was a farmer and
owned an iron works and a sawmill near Earlville, MD. William and Mary lived on the William Sr. estate in MD until it
was divided in 1740. They then moved to
North East, MD to the north side of
Octoraro Creek, two miles Conowingo, east side of the Susquehanna River, on the
main road from Rock Run to Lancaster, PA.
At this site they erected a brick homestead which only recently (1960's)
was reported to be in a good state of preservation. They had over 1700 acres of land.
The Baltimore Sun article
contained the following information about William II: "William Husband II, the elder, resided in Cecil County and
must have come in for a portion of land, including the "iron works"
which his father willed should be equally divided between his sons William II
and Thomas. The records of St. Stephens
Parish state that on 20 May 1720, William Husband was married by the Rev.
Richard Sewell to Mary Kinkey, daughter of Heman and Marjorie Kinkey. This statement is at a variance with a
tradition current among the descendants of William Husband II, which is to the
effect that he married a daughter of Augustine Herman. This tradition has been carried down and
continues among families descended from William Husbands, the members of which
in the present generation are but remotely related to each other. Nevertheless,
some William Husband married Mary Kinkey in 1720. In 1717, when the will of William Husband I was made, William
Husband II the son, was a minor as appears in the will. He must have married as soon as he became of
age."
William and Mary built a
house near Conowingo in the year 1740. Land deeds on record in Baltimore Co.
Book 5 R.No.D. page 19 dated 7th Aug. 1750, Between John Durbin of Baltimore
Co. and William Husband of Cecil Co., MD for the sum of 100 pounds money John
Durbin sells to William Husband. William Husband's land was named Betty's Lott
and contained 92 acres in Cecil Co., MD, close to Conowingo, MD. This house is
still standing and is located just off State Route 222 and Ragan Road on the
way to Lancaster, PA. For more information please write to Larry Husband 6171

Another land record was in
Book No. 1, page 431, Baltimore Co., MD DEeds states Between Ephraim Grover and
William Husband of said County of Baltimore for 26 pounds of money sells land
called Elberton in Baltimore Co. north side of Deer Creek to William Husband on
23 Jul 1755. This is the land William and Susanna (Husband) Bagley lived on.

Rigbie and William Husband for 275 pounds paid James Rigbie from William

80 pounds paid to William Husband for land called Chance about 65 acres and the
other called Stillington about 160 acres which lies between William's land and
his brother's Thomas Husband.
Other land records show
that Baltimore Co. deed book 4L No.6 page 86 made 26 May 1772 between George
Johnson and W. Husband for 28 pounds 15 Shillings paid to George Johnson by W.
Husband for 11/2 of Lot of land lying west side of Susquehanna River. Deed date

William Husband Jr's estate
file inventory of property, "Mount Pleasant" Cecil Co., near Octorara
River and Conowingo Creek, on the main road for Rock Run Maryland to Lancaster
Pennsylvania, this estate received from his father-in-law Herman Kinkey. This
610 acre tract was also called "Leavill" and "Bohemia
Manor" at which location a brick house was erected in 1740 which after
more than 200 years is reported in good state of preservation.
A clipping from the Cecil
Democrat, Dec. 17, 1881 mentions a slate in the wall of a house near a spring
on the road from Lancaster to Port Deposit, where LaFayette quenched his thirst
on his march through. The slate was set
in the wall of a mansion near the eaves and this was on it- W H ( meaning the house was built by William
Husband whose wife's name "M"
was Mary and was built in the year 1740.)

Notes for HERMAN HUSBAND:
[033102.ged]
From Dennis E. Ward - It
seems that William Ward and Herman Husbands appeared on Sandy Creek in Orange
Co NC at about the same time. He has not found any evidence that either one
came with a wife. We have never found their marriage records. Both had been
married and apparently came to Orange Co NC with children.
I believe John was a son of
Mary Pugh's from a previous marriage. I think Dennis E. Ward gave me that
information. Herman Husband then would have adopted John when he married Mary
Pugh. At that point Herman also had the children from his previous marriage in
Maryland, perhaps to Elsie Cox. Dennis E. Ward told me that Herman had arrived
in North Carolina without a wife but with some children, leaving us to assume
that his first wife had died before he immigrated to North Carolina.
Herman Husband figured
historically in the pre-Revolutionary War problem and conflicts in Alamance
Co., NC and in the Whiskey Rebellion after he moved to Somerset Co., PA. There are records of Herman at the Alamance
Battleground Historical Site and at Somerset Co. (PA) State Park site.
Herman was a Quaker
finally, after being of the Church of England, and then a Presbyterian. The Quakers disowned him because of his
activities in the Regulators. He actually was a peaceable man who tried to
avoid violence but he was a leader and believed in rightful treatment of all,
especially the oppressed.
Harmon Husband, a native of
Maryland, was living in Orange County, North Carolina. Shortly after the repeal
of the Stamp Act, Husband and others from patriotic Orange County formed a
small group called the "Regulators". The Regulators banded together
to propose opposition to the growing injustice of the courts in Hillsborough,
Orange County, North Carolina. Husband was a devout Quaker and was against
violence of any kind. However, the Regulators were more prone to violent acts
against the governing justice system and rioted in the city streets.
Husband, was a well known
legislator in Orange County, North Carolina and tried without success to change
the law by peaceable means. However, Husband, was arrested for protesting
unjust collection of taxes and later was declared by "ex post facto"
an instigator in the Hillborough riots.
The Governor, wanting to
try Husband for treason, in the hopes of squelching more riots, jerry-rig a
jury and pronouced Husband guilty. The growing tensions between the Governor's
forces and the militant Regulators erupted in the Battle of Almance. The
Regulator's were severaly defeated and the leaders of the rebellion were
executed. Husband was forced to flee pending immediate execution. He left North
Carolina and returned to his homeland of Maryland. However, word had been
spread about him and the Governor of Maryland gave stern warning to anyone in
Maryland and Virginia who had thoughts of harboring any of the fugitives of the
Battle of Almance.
Mary Husbands died young
and I think Herman married again before Alamance, at which time he had to flee
for his life to PA and hide out. Later he got involved in the Whiskey rebellion
and it seems that he was about to be hanged.
Husband, most notable of
the early settlers to Somerset County PA, was heading for a friend's hunting cabin
in the nearby mountains. Issac Cox, a former neighbor of Husband's kept a small
hunting cabin in Western Pennsylvania and was living there at the time of
Husband's visit.
Harmon Husband, stayed in
Somerset County (then Bedford) and built a cabin six miles from Wagerlines.
Husband, fearing the use of his real name, went by the pseudonym of
"Tuscape Death" (To Escape Death). Wagerline and Cox, however,
preferred to call him the "Old Quaker".
Issac Cox later sold his
land to Harmon Husband (known later as BARRON Farm) and moved west. Husband
acquired several thousand acres of land, most of present day Somerset. Husband,
later became one of the first Assemblymen to the Pennsylvania Legislature from
Bedford County following it's organization after the Declaration of
Independance.
In 1776 he plotted most of
the town of Somerset. In 1790, he presented the petition to the legislature
requesting the formation of Somerset County.
More can be read about him
in the Somerset Co. records and the Laurel Messenger. His Revolutionary Service is mentioned in the SAR Yearbook, p 414. Herman was one of the first settlers of
Somerset County. There is a historical
marker for him by his property on Route 30 in Somerset.
He was arrested for being a
leader of the Whiskey Rebellion and was walked to Philadelphia in chains.

Lester M. Allen. (pgs. 84-86).

DEATH: He died in 1795,
following an unjust imprisonment in Philadelphia, only a few months short of
seeing Somerset chosen as county seat.
From the book "Herman
Husband, A Story of His Life" by Mary Elinor Lazenby; Old Neighborhoods
Press, Washington, D.C., 1940: "It
was on May 12 that Herman Husband with seven others was released from prison,
without leaving a court record behind him to which the curious mind might
refer. He was a dying man. One of the friends he made in Philadelphia that
winter was Elizabeth Peters, wife of Judge Peters. The lady was an Irish
Quakeress and in her visits to Husband in prison the two must have found
congenial subjects of intercourse. Her woman's quick intuition must have sensed
the failing health of the old spiritual warrior and to her a family tradition
credits the expedition of his release. But this seems improbable, as others
were released before him. He started at once to his beloved home beyond the
mountains but could travel no further than a tavern on the outskirts of
Philadelphia. There Emy Husband come to be with him. John came up from North
Carolina. For more than a month he lingered with a fever. Emy must have told
him in the long watches about the new county of Somerset that was being set up,
the petition for whose formation he had placed first before the legislature
five years before The bill had passed on April 17, 1795. The old man may have
sensed that his will, made out in November, 1789, just before coming to the
meeting of the Assembly in Philadelphia, would be the first to be recorded there,
as it was. Curious, he may have reflected, how he had associated Philadelphia
with his death. He was buried there on the afternoon of June 19, 1795"
DEATH: By this time George
Washington was President. George recalled the Alamance Battle etc and
apparently credited the Regulators as the first Americans to shed their blood
for freedom from the English Crown. George Washington did not sign the pardon until
July, 1795, after Herman had already been released from prison and died.

Located on the grounds at
the site of the Alamance Battleground is the Allen House, a log dwelling
characteristic of those lived in by frontier people on the western fringes of
the colony. Family sources suggest that John Allen constructed the house around
1780. John's sister, Amy, was the wife of Herman Husband, the agitator,
pamphleteer prominent in the Regulator movement. The Allen House was donated by
descendants of the family and moved from nearby Snow Camp to the site, where it
was restored and refurbished with its original furnishings. The family papers,
books, and documents tell an interesting story, portraying an authentic example
of living on the frontier during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
