Son of William (13) and Anne Veazey Ward

Born March 24, 1809 at Woodlawn and lived there during his entire life.

Positions held:

  • Vestryman at St. Stephens for many years

  • He held no public offices and of his own choice devoted himself to his home life.

He built the new house at Woodlawn and planted many of the trees which make the lawn so beautiful. He also had "Sheffield", "Arnold's Bar" and late in life purchased "Rose Hill". 

He married _____, 18__, Mary Thompson McLane, daughter of Doctor Allan and Catherine Read McLane of Delaware and granddaughter of Colonel Allan McLane, an officer of the Revolution of 1776; granddaughter also on her mother's side of George Read, son of George Read, one of the signers of the declaration of Independence for Delaware and Gertrude Ross, his wife, who was a daughter of Rev. George Ross, the first Rector of Immanuel Church, New Castle, Delaware; granddaughter also of Mary Thompson Read (her mother's mother, daughter of General William Thompson of Pennsylvania, an officer of the Revolution of 1776 whose wife was Catherine Ross a daughter of the Rev. George Ross above mentioned.

He died at Woodlawn ___ 26, 1873, and was buried in the Ward lot at St. Stephens. Mary McLane Ward died in 1882 an was buried beside her husband.

  • Julia Ward (23), who married Rev. W. H. H. Cruikshank and had children:

    • Ward Cruikshank, born _____; married _____ Mitchell of Charles County, Maryland, and died 1906 leaving two children.

    • Miriam Cruikshank

    • Harry Cruikshank

    • Julia Cruikshank

  • Catherine Ward (24) who died in childhood.

  • William Ward (25), twin brother to Thomas Ward

  • Thomas Ward (29), styled "Sixth of Woodlawn"; twin brother to William Ward

  • Lilly Ward, who died in childhood

  • Elizabeth McLane Ward, born at Woodlawn, and married Warrington Love of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has a son

    • Thomas Ward Love
