FFE - Realizing their Achilles Heel against missile and fighter swarms,
the ESU attempted to fill this gap by building the KRIVAK Class escort
frigate. Unfortunately, while cheap compared to other escort ships, it had
almost no staying power in combat, and could not dish out any appreciable
damage. In addition to that, in order to be of any worth this class of
ship could not be assigned as the sole anti-fighter/missile platform of a
squadron. So usually 2 or more were assigned, if at all.
Service details
DDM - The ESU never really subscribed to the FSE's point of view with
regards to missiles and expendable ordnance, but they did design a few ship
classes with salvo-missiles as their primary armament. Generally they did not
fulfill the desires of their designers. The KASHIN Class destroyer was
one of those design attempts. Unfortunately, since it's salvo-missile load was
a one-shot deal, and required the removal of the original design's Class-2
batteries, this ship class was ill-suited for independent operations. The plus
side of this design is that the salvo-missile package the KASHIN
destroyers carried was usually of the 'extended-range' variety, allowing them
to generally get the first hit in.
Service details
CE+ - A 'defensive close-support' variant to the BEIJING/B, this
was one of the ESU's most successful escort-type ships. And in fact, one of the
most successful escort-type ships in all the four powers, with the exception
being the few CL+ KRONPRINZ WILHELM escort variants. Although the ESU
have no plans to continue building this model, as they are looking into an
upgraded version.
Service details
BC/B - This variation to the MANCHURIA class battlecruiser, the
LUDA class was meant to be an 'in your face' ship-killer, replacing the
two 3-arc Class-3 batteries with two 3-arc pulse torps. It has acquitted itself
well in combat.
Service details
BCE - Looking for an upgrade or replacement for the BEIJING/B
close-in defense cruiser (CE+), the KRESTA class escort battlecruiser
was created as another design option for the ESU Navy. With a suite of 6 PDS'
and 2 Area Defence Fire Controls, the KRESTA could easily cover any one
ship from most anti-fighter/missile attacks, or spread it's defensive umbrella
to cover two different ships. It proved to be one of the more versatile escort
ships in the ESU fleet. And it carries sufficient mid-range armament to hold
its own in combat. Its main drawback is the pricetag.
Service details
BC/M - The UDALOY ("Daring") class battlecruiser was
the ESU's attempt to design an ordnance-expending heavy ship that still
retained the ability to sustain independent operations. It has met with mixed
results.
Service details
BC/V - The ADMIRAL KOSOV class battlecruiser-carrier was a
side project of Admiral Kosov, who was a major proponent of space fighter
superiority. However, his design to redo the battlecruisers to become
mini-light carriers did more harm than good to the space fighter cause in the
Voyenno-Kosmicheskiy Flot. While it retained the defensive capabilities of the
MANCHURIA class BC, stripping out all weapons (save a lone Class-1) in
order to fit in two hangar bays met with great reluctance on the part of the
crews, and gave it absolutely no punch power beyond its fighters. Of the three
that were built, one was destroyed in a skirmish between the NAC and the
Phalons, and one was 'retired' to be carrier academy training vessel (albeit an
expensive one). The ADMIRAL KOSOV itself (VKK-2714A) still serves
the ESU fleet, but usually in backwater systems where it can't get into much
trouble. Admiral Kosov himself generally commands the helm. Where he can't make
too much trouble for the ESU Admirality.
BB/S - The SOVREMENNY ("Modern") class battleship was
the ESU's answer to the NAC's VICTORIA class battleship. This is a
relatively new ship to the VSK's fleet, so not many have been built - yet! It
is designed to operate on independent patrols and so follows the VSK doctrine
of not mounting expendable ordnance. So far early use of the SOVs have
met with favorable results
Tactical Doctrines
The ESU run with a primarily Independent Doctrine, sort of like an 'every ship for himself' type attitude. Because of this the ESU never really subscribed heavily to the true 'escort' class ship. Hence this is the reason why they have so few true escort-type ships, and even their escort ships are, for the most part, capable combat vessels in their own right.
Typically the ESU use 3 main types of fighters: standard, heavy, and attack. This does not mean they do not use any of the other types, just that these are their usual fighter types used.
