Gref Roelofs has patched XPaint to allow read and write of PNG files in this XWindows application. The current maintainer is Torsten Martinsen.

Here's an example of PNG compression size vs. GIF. I snarfed an image of the Maryland State flag off the net. The original GIF file is:

bytes name

2900  MDflag.GIF

By tweaking the pixels and bringing it down to 4 colors, I got the modified GIF to be:

bytes name
----- ----
1766  maryland_flag_4.gif

But the PNG file converted from that GIF is even smaller:

bytes name
----- ----
939   maryland_flag_4.png

file This reduction of nearly 2/3 will decrease the network transfer time significantly.
