Hiya Hounds,
It is with a heavy heart that I take up my keyboard to let you all know
that "Holy Peters", he whose "particular
specialty [was] the beguiling of lonely ladies" is no more.
Alan passed over the Reichenbach in the early hours of 6th May. I spoke to
his wife Olive this evening (7th May) and she was in good spirits but
expecting the shock to hit her soon. She has family close by to look after
her.
Please raise a glass and toast the memory of one of the "elder statesmen"
of the Sherlockian movement in Australia.

How very sad. I shall miss his intelligent and insightful posts. Requiesce in pace.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was an old-time radio show which aired in the USA from October 2, 1939 to July 7, 1947.
Originally, the show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Bromo Quinine sponsored some of the earlier programs on the NBC Blue Network and for a period Parker Pen was the sponsor. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. It was thought that only about 50 episodes were still in existence, but today well over 150 have been found.
Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher." He was eager to separate himself from the cast type of Holmes, and even though the show's sponsor Petri Wine offered him generous pay to continue, he decided to move on. Once he did, the sponsor did as well, and Tom Conway took the starring role, though Nigel Bruce got top billing and was always announced first. The new sponsor was Kreml Hair Tonic for Men, and the new series only lasted 39 episodes.
With Rathbone and Bruce, the show exhibited an interesting introduction. The sponsor's spokesman would show up weekly at Dr. Watson's house (then retired and living in California), and share a story about Sherlock Holmes and his adventures over a glass of Petri wine. This offered them the chance to sometimes bring in other characters to contribute to the story, and also gave Watson a chance to summarize or add additional tidbits at the end. Another interesting thing about this radio shows introductions was Watson's anecdotes and comments about his dogs usually referred to as the "Puppies". -- From Wikipedia.

I am deeply saddened to hear this news. Alan was a scholar and a gentleman
and will be much missed. Heaven is the richer today.

Subject: More Sidney Paget drawings, address change
I've updated the list of original Sidney Paget art with ownership
confirmations on quite a few entries, some corrections and new details,
better images for his Red Triangle drawings (thanks Christopher Roden!), and
several new drawings and paintings including Paget's portrait of Conan Doyle
(now at The Sherlock Holmes Museum of Lucens, Switzerland).
It also has one more Holmes drawing (for the Priory School), so the census
(still preliminary) now includes 30 Holmes drawings. It's available at:

If anyone knows about other original Paget art and/or can put me in touch
with owners, please send me email off-list. As always I will keep owners
and source's identity private upon request.
For those wanting to contact me, I'm now using a Gmail address (but the
website is still at the old location).

I was sorry to hear the sad news about Alan. He was on the List when I
joined and I soon learned to appreciate his friendly, congenial
presence. Our List has suffered a deep loss.

I'm a fan of old time radio (OTR) shows, and thought I'd mention that
you can find places selling MP3 CDs of shows like this. My favorite
place to get OTR shows is OTRCat.com, and this is where I got the
Sherlock Holmes episodes I have. The page for their Sherlock Holmes
disks is http://www.otrcat.com/sherlock-holmes-p-1825.html if you're
interested. They're $5 per CD and the series has 3 CDs for $15 total
merchandise cost; shipping on 3 CDs would be $4.75. I hope this
information is helpful to some of you.

Wasn't it Alan Olding who, every June 6, gave the Hounds his marvelous paean
to those intrepid souls who stormed the beaches of Normandy in 1944?

Hiya Hounds,
Can someone please supply contact details (name, postal and/or email
addresses) for "The Delaware Valley of Fear" society.
I've been given a name in conjunction with this society, James P.
Suszynski, but not sure if he is one of the organisers or just a member.
Thanks for any assistance (off-list of course).

That particular scion society is out of business.
I tried contacting Jim Suszynski several years back, but got no repsonse.
Yours faithfully,
