June 30, 2008 - It seems impossible that today is our final day of business, but it is. Here are a few last minute announcements and reminders for those of you who have stayed with us to the very end... Click here for more.
| More Phishing Spam Hits BCPL & BCPL.NET Mailboxes [Security] | |
June 27, 2008 - In the past several months I have sent out several BCPL.NET NEWS message
warning against "phishing" e-mails. They are still coming, and
unfortunately some BCPL staff and BCPL.NET customers are still falling for
the scam. Our e-mail system received a large number of phishing e-mails
last night, so it's time for another reminder. These e-mails have two things in common:
1) They appear to be from BCPL or BCPL.NET.
2) They ask you to send your username and password to some e-mail address
in order to prevent loss of access to your e-mail (or something similar).
These e-mails are a type of spam called "phishing", so named because the
spammers are fishing for people who will fall for the scam. If they get
any bites, they use the victims' usernames and passwords to log into those
accounts. They then use the accounts to send out large amounts of spam.
We will NEVER request that you e-mail your username and password to us,
nor will any other reputable company. If you receive a request of that
type that appears to be from us or from anyone else, DO NOT RESPOND TO IT!
If you have already responded to a phishing spam, please immediately
contact the Staff Help Desk if you are a BCPL staff member or the BCPL.NET
Help Desk (410-887-3297 or help@bcpl.net) so we can take steps to prevent
your account from being used for spam distribution.
| BCPL & BCPL.NET Offices & Libraries Closed Memorial Day [Closings] | |

BCPL.NET offices and Help Desk, will be closed on Monday May 26th in
observation of Memorial Day. Any voice mail or e-mail left for the
BCPL.NET Help Desk (410-887-3297 or help@bcpl.net) or for other BCPL.NET

reopen on Tuesday May 27th.

Computer security has become an issue of concern lately, so the Help Desk has created the Security Center, an information-rich guide to the most common
security issues related to the Internet.
This is highly recommended reading for
anyone new to the Internet as it
provides tips for preventing extraneous phone bill charges, computer slowness, personal information theft, and junk
mail filling your inbox.

Having trouble opening an e-mail attachment? First, confirm with the sender (by e-mail, phone, etc) that it is a safe and legitimate attachment. If necessary, also confirm with the sender that you have the proper program installed on your computer to open the file you have been sent. A list of file extensions, what they stand for, and what is required to open them can be found here, and in various other places around the web.
